Austin was born and raised in San Francisco. He joined the US Army in 1964 and the San Francisco Fire Department in 1970.  After graduating from UCSF Dental School in 1977, he married and bought a dentist practice in Redwood City.  He practiced there for more than ten years, before joining other dental practices.  Austin retired from the SFFD in 2003 and moved to Orange County in 2006. He is now primarily active in charity work and works as an on call dentist.
